Your email list, as a small local business, is your greatest marketing asset…
Not Twitter. Not Facebook. Not even your website!
As a local business you have an advantage to collect emails over businesses that operate on just the web! You really do!
Small businesses on the web can only collect emails from one place…their website.
You however, can setup a fish bowl for business cards, tear sheets at local events, and use a submission form on your site.
I can show you how to implement (in my opinion) the best email marketing program that is available to you.
Why do I think its the best? It’s free…FOREVER. Plus there is a ton of really neat stuff you can do with it.
Tiny Letter To The Rescue
TinyLetter is the name and simple, easy email marketing is their game.
It’s super easy to get started. Head to TinyLetter.com to start the process.
- Try to use your business name as your user name.
- Make sure you insert your business address. This will help get you through spam filters in the future.
- Setup your newsletter name and what kind of messages you’ll be sending them. Take full advantage of this field: how often you’ll be sending messages, ask what kind of stuff they’d like to receive from you, or what their favorite items are. Use this area to get intimate with your customers and build trust.
- Now remind them where they signed up. Just in case they forget and don’t want to confirm.
Use A Call To Action and Instant Reward
Let’s jump a hurdle right out of the gate.
You need to offer some sort of incentive to grow your email list.
Do this both offline and online.
I find a simple “1/2 Off” type of offer works the best.
The great thing about TinyLetter is that it uses a “double opt-in” process and sends the new user a “Welcome Message” that you can customize. This is where you want to put your coupon.
In the “Settings” tab at the top right of the screen is the option to customize your “Welcome Message To Subscribers.”
Give them the option to show it on their phone so you can promote
You can upload an image to your site and insert the html here if you are tech savvy.
But, for most of you who need a solution that’s fast and simple, just insert the discount as plain text that the user can either print off or show on their phone.
Embed Your Form
Let’s customize a couple of things on this form to optimize it.
If you embed it as is, it’ll work…
Let’s shrink it down (so we can use it in a side bar or on a page), change the “submit” title on the button, and insert a call to action (CTA).
Take the code below and paste it into a notepad on your computer.
Feel free to experiment with it, if you break it just copy and paste the code again.
Do NOT use this exact code, this is tied to my newsletter. Just use the code as a reference.
With the code below you’ll need to add the “width:200px;“. Change just the numbers in the purple areas and change the text in the orange areas.
<form style=”width: 200px;border:1px solid # ccc;padding:3px;text-align:center;” action=”https://tinyletter.com/radicalmike” method=”post” target=”popupwindow” onsubmit=”window.open(‘https://tinyletter.com/radicalmike’, ‘popupwindow’, ‘scrollbars=no,width=550,height=650‘);return true”><p><label for=”tlemail”>Insert Offer Here</label></p><p><input type=”text” style=”width:180px” name=”email” id=”tlemail” /></p><input type=”hidden” value=”1″ name=”embed”/><input type=”submit” value=”Get Coupon!” /></form>
If you want to bypass all this you can just copy and paste the link that they provide
https://tinyletter.com/the-user-name-you-setup (should be your business name)
Either way you choose is fine.
